Alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha-HCH)is produced as a byproduct during the commercial synthesis of lindane, an organochlorine insecticide. The production process involves the chlorination of benzene in the presence of ultraviolet light or a catalyst, leading to the formation of technical-grade hexachlorocyclohexane, a mixture of several isomers. This mixture typically contains 60–70% of the alpha isomer, along with the various other isomers. Since only the gamma-isomer (lindane) has significant insecticidal activity, it is separated and purified from the mixture, while the remaining isomers, including alpha-HCH, are considered waste or low-value byproducts.
