General procedure for the preparation of β-nitroalcohols using Fe3O4-PEG-ImBr in water

General procedure: The catalyst Fe3O4-PEG-ImBr (0.05 g) was added to a mixture of epoxide (1 mmol) and sodium nitrite (5 mmol) in water (5 mL), and the mixture was stirred at 90°C for a time indicated in Table 2. The progress of the reaction was monitored by TLC using hexane-ethyl acetate (5 : 1) as eluent. When the reaction was complete, the product was extracted with diethyl ether (3 ×10 mL), and the combined extracts were dried over CaCl2 and evaporated under reduced pressure. The yields of β-nitro alcohols are listed in Table 1.
