Commercial production of diazinon involves a carefully controlled multi-step synthesis to ensure high purity and minimal toxic by-products. The process typically begins with the reaction of 2-isopropyl-4-methyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine with a strong base like sodium or potassium hydroxide in a solvent such as a ketone or ether, maintained at around 50–60 DegC to form a homogeneous mixture. Next, diethylthiophosphoryl chloride is added, and the reaction mixture is kept at 55–80 DegC until the transformation is complete.
