Sodium monofluoroacetate has historically been produced through a straightforward neutralisation and purification process rather than a complex multi-step synthesis. Industrial manufacturers begin with fluoroacetic acid, which itself is obtained from established fluorination chemistry, and react it with a sodium base, typically sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate, under controlled conditions to form the sodium salt. The resulting sodium monofluoroacetate solution is then concentrated, crystallised, filtered, and dried to yield a stable technical-grade solid.

Steps:

28.A Step A: Sodium 2-fluoroacetate (28-b)
Ethyl 2-fluoroacetate, 28-a, (107g, lmol) was dissolved in absolute EtOH (1L), cooled to 0°C and NaOH (40g, lmol) in EtOH was added. The reaction was stirred overnight after which petroleum ether was added. The reaction solution was cooled to -20°C and filtered giving 104g of title compound, 28-b, as white solid (yield 99 %)
