Steps:

1,3,5-Tribromobenzene (4)

To a stirred solution of compound 3 (9.90 g, 0.03 mol) in ethanol containing H2SO4 (3.0 g, 0.03 mol) at room temperature, NaNO2 (2.10 g, 0.03 mol) was added in 10 portions over a period of 1 h at room temperature. Then the reaction mixture was heated to reflux for several hours. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and the resulting precipitate was filtered and recrystallised from ethanol to give 4: Light brownish needles; yield 8.50 g, 90%; m.p. 119-121 °C (lit.18121.5-122.5 °C); 1H NMR (500 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 7.61 (s, 3H); MS (m/z):316 [M + H]+.
