Commercial production of 2,4 D trolamine follows the same industrial pathway used for other amine salts of 2,4 D, a long established phenoxyacetic acid herbicide. Manufacturers first produce technical grade 2,4 D acid, then neutralise it with triethanolamine (trolamine) under controlled aqueous conditions to form the highly water soluble trolamine salt.
