Ethametsulfuron-methyl Chemical Properties, Uses, Production
Description
Ethametsulfuron-methyl is a selective herbicide. It is moderately soluble in water, volatile and, based on its chemical properties, presents a high risk of leaching to groundwater. It is relatively persistent in both soil and aqueous systems. It has a low mammalian toxicity but may bio-accumulate. It has a low toxicity to birds and most aquatic species, the exception being aquatic plants including algae. It is moderately toxic to honeybees.
Uses
Ethametsulfuron-methyl is a regulator of the early steps of complement activation on mucosal surfaces. It can be used in combination treatment of ohmic heating with various essential oil components for inactivation of food-borne pathogens in buffered peptone water and salsa.
Definition
ChEBI: Ethametsulfuron-methyl is a methyl ester resulting from the formal condensation of the carboxy group of ethametsulfuron with methanol. A herbicide used for the control of broad-leaved weeds in oil seed rape and fodder rape. It has a role as a herbicide and an EC 2.2.1.6 (acetolactate synthase) inhibitor. It is a diamino-1,3,5-triazine, a N-sulfonylurea, an aromatic ether, a benzoate ester and a methyl ester. It is functionally related to an ethametsulfuron.
Production Methods
Ethametsulfuron-methyl via a multi-step sulfonylurea synthesis starting from 2-amino-4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine, which is sulfonylated with 2-(ethoxycarbonyl)ethylsulfonyl chloride in the presence of a base to form the sulfonamide. This intermediate is activated with phosgene or triphosgene to generate the sulfonyl isocyanate, which undergoes condensation with methyl 2-amino-4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-5-carboxylate under controlled conditions to construct the urea bridge. Final hydrolysis, methyl esterification, and recrystallization yield ethametsulfuron-methyl.
Agricultural Uses
Ethametsulfuron-methyl is used as Herbicide,Plant growth inhibitor. Pending in EU countries. Registered for use in the U.S.
