Chemical Properties
Pure product is white crystal. m.p.209～210℃, solubility at 25℃: tetrahydrofuran 19.3g/L, benzene 14.1g/L, acetone 8.3g/L, ethanol 1.1g/L, water 2.49mg/L. It is stable to light, heat, acid, and weak alkali, but it decomposes and destroys the ester ring if it is boiled with strong alkali solution. Completely decomposed after 180d in soil.
Uses
Phthalide (Fthalide) is a fungicide used against the Penicillium and Aspergiillus species of fungus. Pesticide.
Definition
ChEBI: A member of the class of 2-benzofurans that is 2-benzofuran-1(3H)-one in which all or the hydrogens attached to the benzene ring are replaced by chlorines. A fungicide used for the control of rice blast, it is not approved for use within the European Union.
Production Methods
The industrial production of phthalide involves the selective chlorination of phthalide or phthalic anhydride precursors under controlled conditions using chlorine gas or chlorinating agents. This process introduces four chlorine atoms onto the aromatic ring, enhancing the compound’s fungicidal properties.
