Vat Orange 3 Chemical Properties, Uses, Production

Chemical Properties

Purple-red powder. Insoluble in water, ethanol, acetone, toluene, slightly soluble in hot chloroform, pyridine, o-chlorophenol, soluble in tetrahydronaphthalene, xylene. Reddish-purple in alkaline insurance powder reducing solution, orange in acidic solution.

Uses

Vat Orange 3 is used for dyeing cotton and printing cotton fabrics, as well as for dyeing linen, viscose, and silk. It has good leveling properties and moderate affinity. It is also used in the manufacture of organic pigments.

Synthesis

4,10-Dibromoanthanthrone, Indanthren Brilliant Orange RK, is prepared from 1,1'-binaphthyl-8,8'- dicarboxylic acid in sulfuric acid monohydrate at 35 C, followed by bromination in the presence of iodine . It is also used as a pigment.
