Definition
ChEBI: TCA-ethadyl is a diester. It is functionally related to a trichloroacetic acid and an ethylene glycol.
Production Methods
TCA-ethadyl was produced by first generating technical trichloroacetic acid through the standard chlorination-oxidation route from acetic acid or acetaldehyde, then converting it into an ester with ethylene glycol derivatives under controlled acidic conditions. This esterification step yielded the di-(2-hydroxyethyl) trichloroacetate material historically referred to as TCA-ethadyl, which offered improved handling and reduced volatility compared with the free acid. After reaction completion, the product mixture was purified by phase separation and controlled distillation or crystallisation to remove unreacted alcohols and by products.
