| Synthesis | Step 1: Dimethyl (S)-2-aminosuccinate hydrochloride (5.0 g, 25.3 mmol) was dissolved in a solvent mixture of dichloromethane (50 mL) and water (25 mL) and sodium bicarbonate (4.25 g, 50.6 mmol) was added to the system. The reaction mixture was stirred for 4 hours and then the solvent was removed by rotary evaporator.
