intravenous anesthetic for minor surgery
and gynecology. It is characterized by rapid
onset of and quick recovery from anesthesia,
producing surgical anesthesia for 3 – 4 min. Repeated
injections can be used to prolong the
anesthesia. Postanesthetic sleep does not occur
because the propyl ester is hydrolyzed rapidly
in the patient to form inactive 3-methoxy-4-
(N,N-diethylcarbamoylmethoxy)phenylacetic
acid. After 20 – 30 min the patients generally
