DescriptionClopyralid olamine is a selective herbicide used to control weeds in turf. It is moderately persistent in the environment and, based on its physico-chemical properties, it has high potential to leach to groundwater. Clopyralid olamine tends to be low to moderately toxic to fauna and flora. It has a low mammalian toxicity as a skin, eye and respiratory irritant

Production MethodsClopyralid itself is produced industrially as 3,6 dichloropyridine 2 carboxylic acid, typically via chlorination and carboxylation routes applied to pyridine derivatives. Refinement processes described in patents involve electrochemical synthesis followed by membrane based concentration and purification to achieve a high purity acid. The olamine (monoethanolamine) salt is then formed through a straightforward neutralisation step in which purified clopyralid acid is reacted with monoethanolamine to yield the water soluble clopyralid olamine salt used in herbicide formulations.
