A solution of bromine (2.53 g, 0.82 mL, 0.0158 mol) in dichloromethane (8 mL) was added dropwise to a solution of 2-acetylthiophene (2.0 g, 1.71 mL, 0.0158 mol) in dichloromethane (10 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at 25 °C for 1 h and subsequently neutralized with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic layer was washed with water and dried. After evaporation of the solvent, the solid residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, eluent ethyl acetate:n-hexane = 5:95) to afford 2-bromo-1-(thiophen-2-yl)ethan-1-one as an oil (2.60 g, 80% yield).
