4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid (4-HPPA) is a metabolic intermediate of phenylalanine. The side chain of phenylalanine is hydroxylated to tyrosine by phenylalanine hydroxylase. Tyrosine is then converted by tyrosine aminotransferase to 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid. 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid is also a precursor to the biosynthesis of pseudocladin.
