Water (H2O) Lewis Structure Explained Step-by-Step

Water(H2O) appears as a clear, nontoxic liquid composed of hydrogen and oxygen, essential for life and the most widely used solvent. It is existing in gaseous, liquid, and solid states.

Molecular geometry
The Lewis Structure for water is useful because it allows to determine the molecular geometry and the polarity of the molecule. Because of the two lone pairs, H2O will have a bent molecular geometry and it will be a polar molecule.
Steps for drawing the Lewis structure of H2O

Step 1: Count the total number of valence electrons
Hydrogen(H) is a Group IA element with one electron in its outermost shell (valence shell).
Oxygen(O) is a Group VIA element with six electrons in its last shell.
The total number of valence electrons required to draw the lewis structure of H2O= 1*2*+6 = 8 valence electrons.
Step 2: Determine the central atom and the framework
The ability to have a higher valence is important for being the centre atom. Therefore, Oxygen will be the central atom.
Step 3: Draw covalent bonds (shared electrons)
There are four electron pairs in total, with two H-O bonds.
Step 4: Assign lone pairs of electrons (satisfying the octet rule)
There are only two electron pairs left to mark on atoms which cannot be done on the outside atoms – hydrogen as it cannot hold more than two electrons in its last shell.
As a result, the two electron pairs are marked on the central atom – oxygen.
Step 5: Check stability
Since there are no charges on atoms, there is no need to reduce charges as part of the process of drawing the best Lewis structure. We already have the best Lewis structure for H2O.
