Description

SN-38 is the active metabolite of irinotecan , a derivative of the alkaloid camptothecin , and acts as a potent inhibitor of DNA topoisomerase I. It is formed by the hydrolysis of irinotecan by carboxylesterases and metabolized through glucuronidation by UDP glucuronosyl transferase 1A1. SN-38 is a more potent topopisomerase I inhibitor and more cytotoxic to HT-29 colon cancer cells (IC50 = 8.8 nM) compared to irinotecan (IC50 > 100 nM).
