a) From 4-methyl-3-nitrophenol (9.48 g, 61.90 mmol), triphenylphosphine (19.60 g, 74.73 mmol), and 2-benzyloxyethanol (9.83 g, 64.59 mmol) in tetrahydofuran (130 ml) with DEAD (12.4 ml, 95%, 74.81 mmol) was obtained 2-methyl-1-nitro-4-[2-(phenylmethoxy)ethoxy]benzene (14.06 g, 79%) as a yellow oil. 1 H NMR (CDCl3) 8.04 (1H, d, J=9.77), 7.35-7.25 (5H, m), 6.80-6.77 (2H, m), 4.59 (2H, s), 4.17 (2H, m), 3.82 (2H, m), 2.58 (3H, s).
