Vanadyl acetylacetonate Chemical Properties, Uses, Production

Synthesis

Using concentrated sulfuric acid, ethanol, and vanadium pentoxide as raw materials, the reaction process involves a large amount of concentrated sulfuric acid, requiring sophisticated equipment and generating pollution. The yield is 71%. The specific process is as follows:

Oxidation of double bonds: Sharpless et al. reported that in nonpolar solvents such as toluene or dichloroethane, the vanadium peroxide organic complex formed by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH) and Vanadyl acetylacetonate [VO(acac)2] exhibits ideal oxidation effect on allyl alcohols, with rapid reaction, stereoselectivity, mild conditions, and high yield.

The following reactions confirm this mechanism and also demonstrate the superior performance of Vanadyl acetylacetonate as an oxidation co-catalyst. This complex can also be prepared from tetravalent vanadium compounds, such as vanadium oxysulfate (IV): VOSO4 + 2Hacac → VO(acac)2 + H2SO4 It can also be prepared via a redox reaction of vanadium pentoxide and acetylacetone. However, a portion of the acetylacetone will be oxidized to acetic anhydride.

Vanadium(IV) Oxide Acetylacetonate is used as a catalyst in organic chemistry and is also an intermediate in synthetic reactions, such as the synthesis of novel oxovanadium complexes that display antitumor activity.

Uses

Vanadyl acetylacetonate may be used as a precursor for the preparation of vanadium dioxide thin films for applications in “intelligent” window coating and data storage.
