Synthesis2-Butanone undergoes basecatalyzed aldolization with acetaldehyde to form 4-hydroxy-3-methylpentan-2-one. Acidcatalyzed dehydration to 3-methyl-3-penten-2- one is followed by hydrogenation over a palladium catalyst to give 3-methyl-2-pentanone.
