| Chemical Properties | clear slightly yellowish liquid | | Synthesis | GENERAL METHOD: Thionyl chloride (1.06 mL, 14.63 mmol) was added slowly and dropwise to a solution of 3-chlorophenylacetic acid (1 g, 4.877 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in a solvent mixture of ethyl acetate and water. The aqueous phase was extracted with ethyl acetate and the combined organic phases were washed with aqueous sodium bicarbonate.
