GENERAL METHOD: Thionyl chloride (1.06 mL, 14.63 mmol) was added slowly and dropwise to a solution of 3-chlorophenylacetic acid (1 g, 4.877 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in a solvent mixture of ethyl acetate and water. The aqueous phase was extracted with ethyl acetate and the combined organic phases were washed with aqueous sodium bicarbonate. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give methyl m-chlorophenylacetate (6a-f).
