It is scattered in the central and peripheral nervous systems. The calcitonin/calcitonin gene-related peptide gene complex codes for a small family of peptides: calcitonin, katacalcin and CALCA. This vasodilator is potent than other vasodilators, such as adenosine, substance P or acetylcholine. CALCA gene is located on human chromosome 11p15.2-p15.1.
