The production of zineb involves a two-step chemical synthesis process. First, ethylenediamine is reacted with carbon disulphide and aqueous ammonia in the presence of a stabiliser such as sodium pyrosulphite, sodium sulphite, or sodium hydrosulphite. This reaction yields an intermediate compound known as "ambis." In the second step, ambis is reacted with zinc chloride in the presence of a catalyst, commonly bismuth molybdate, nickel on alumina or cobalt-based catalysts, to produce zineb.

Reaction Conditions:

with sodium hydroxide in waterAddn. of CS2 in portions at 20-30°C to a mixt. of an aq. soln. of several amines and of NaOH (H2O), heating of mixt. (1.5 h, 45-60°C), cooling and then treatment with soln. of ZnCl2.; Filtn. of ppt., washing, and drying.;
