DIRECT RED 80 Chemical Properties, Uses, Production

Chemical Properties

Reddish brown powder. Soluble in water, solubility in water (60℃) 30g/L. Aqueous solution is bluish red to magenta, adding concentrated hydrochloric acid produces purple precipitate; adding concentrated sodium hydroxide solution is magenta purple. Difficult to dissolve in ethanol, ethylene glycol ether, insoluble in other organic solvents. Blue in concentrated sulfuric acid, bluish red to purple after dilution. Blue in concentrated nitric acid.

Uses

Stain for connective tissue. Dye for cellulose fibers.

Uses

Direct red 80 is a dye useful as a cardiac muscle stain and as a model compound in adsorption studies. It has also been utilized to compare efficacy of textile dye removal in aqueous solutions.

Definition

ChEBI: An organic sodium salt resulting from the formal condensation of Sirius red F3B (acid form) with six equivalents of sodium hydroxide. A polyazo dye used principally in staining methods for collagen and amyloid.
