Chemical Properties
Phenylethyl Salicylate has been reported to occur in some essential flower oils, is a crystalline solid (mp 44°C) with a weak, long-lasting, balsamic, blossom odor, reminiscent of rose and hyacinth.

Phenethyl salicylate has a faint but persistent rose-like odor, somewhat hyacinth- and carnation-like. It has a sweet taste suggestive of peach, apricot and honey.

Uses
PHENETHYL SALICYLATE is a permitted edible flavoring agent as specified in GB 2760-96. It is mainly used in the formulation of peach, apricot, and honey flavorings. It is also used as a flavor harmonizer and fixative.
Preparation
From phenethyl alcohol and methylsalicylate by interchange; also by esterification of phenethyl alcohol with salicylic acid.

Production Methods
Phenethyl salicylate can be produced 1) from Phenylethyl alcohol and Methyl salicylate by alcohol interchange reaction. 2) by azeotropic esterification of Phenylethyl alcohol with Salicylic acid.

Combustible liquid. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes
