1,8-Naphthalic anhydride Usage And Synthesis
Chemical PropertiesBEIGE TO LIGHT BROWN POWDER
UsesDyestuffs, organic synthesis in general.
Uses1,8-Naphthalic anhydride is used as a seed protectant and to prepare dyestuffs and optical brighteners. It is used in the preparation of napthalimide analogues, which finds application as anticancer agents. Further, it is used as fluorescent brightening agent for polymeric materials.
DefinitionChEBI: Naphthalic anhydride is a cyclic dicarboxylic anhydride.
Production MethodsNo public source provides a proprietary industrial synthesis for nahthalic anhydride. However, its production can be inferred from its chemical structure. Industrial manufacture would typically begins with oxidation of naphthalene to form 1,8 naphthalic acid, followed by intramolecular dehydration to generate the anhydride ring system, steps consistent with the way 1,8 naphthalic anhydride is produced as a chemical intermediate in the dye and agrochemical industries. After cyclodehydration, the crude anhydride would be purified through controlled heating, solvent washing, and crystallisation to achieve the high purity required for use as a safener in seed treatment formulations.
Mechanism of actionEnhances cytochrome P450-mediated oxidative metabolism of the herbicide
Purification MethodsExtract it with cold aqueous Na2CO3 to remove free acid, then crystallise from acetic anhydride. [Beilstein 17 III/IV 6392, 17/11 V 492.]
